Dr. Loren Crabtree Dr. Loren Crabtree
Dr. Loren W. Crabtree retired in 2008 as Chancellor of the University of Tennessee, completing a 44-year career in higher education. His academic specialization is 20th-century Chinese history, with a special interest in Chinese-American relations. He has published more than 60 professional articles, reports and books. His research has been supported by fellowships and awards from the National Defense Education Act (Titles III and VI), the U.S. Department of Education, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, among others.
He holds the B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in History and Asian Studies from the University of Minnesota. His teaching and administrative career includes service at Bethel College (Minnesota), Colorado State University (where he served as a professor, dean and provost) and the University of Tennessee. His administrative career emphasized curricular changes that prepare students to be "Ready for the World."
Dr. Crabtree's affiliation with Semester at Sea began with his teaching on the S.S.Universe in Fall1980, and continued with three stints as Executive Dean (Fall 1986, Fall 1991 and Spring 2010). He served as Senior Fellow and Chief Executive for Global Education for SAS in 2008-2009.
