By some measures, retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is working harder than she did when she was on the nation’s highest court. The law allows retired justices to continue working as judges on lower federal courts, and O’Connor has enthusiastically thrown herself into that. She travels around the country, filling in when appellate judges are on vacation or seats are vacant.

Over 550 U.S. College Students To Port In China On Historic Voyage Around The World
More than 550 students from the US and other nations will arrive in Hong Kong tomorrow morning, 11 November, as part of the Semester at Sea shipboard study-abroad program for a two-day stay in Hong Kong, before continuing on to Shanghai for an additional two days of exploring China from November 15-16. This is Semester at Sea's 100th voyage, making it an important landmark in the program's history, and China is one of the final countries on the program's impressive 108-day itinerary.

Rochester Junior Wins Scholarship for Study Abroad Semester at Sea
Eric Phamdo, a junior majoring in psychology with a minor in biology at the University of Rochester, has been awarded the Semester at Sea Diversity Abroad Scholarship. Phamdo is the second Rochester student to receive this scholarship and is one of only five students chosen from a national pool of applicants. Phamdo will spend the spring 2010 semester enrolled in the Semester at Sea program studying in 8 countries, including Ghana, Brazil, and South Africa. The Diversity Abroad Scholarship will help Phamdo offset approximately 50 percent of the program's cost.

In 1873 French author Jules Verne published Around the World in Eighty Days, the adventurous tale of an English gentleman and his French valet who circumnavigate the globe in 80 days by train, steam ship, and elephant. Their trip begins in London and includes stops in Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, and New York. The journey certainly provided the pair with an education in international travel. Today their itinerary—minus the elephants—resembles those offered by global education abroad programs such as Semester at Sea.

PLEASANTON, Calif., and NEW YORK: Global Nomads Group, an organization dedicated to fostering cross-cultural dialogue and understanding among youth, and Polycom, Inc., the world’s leading provider of unified collaborative solutions, today announced the initial results of the first "Agents of Change" initiative. The initiative is a global one-day event focused on raising awareness and funds for education, rehabilitation and youth support programs for the terrorized children of northern Uganda. "Agents of Change" is the first program centered on Project Uganda, an interactive video conferencing program that enabled U.S. students to learn about the challenges in Padibe, Uganda. Through the program, U.S. students connected with Ugandan students to learn first-hand about the daily conflicts they faced in the region.

Some call it a blessing in disguise, but I wasn't buying it. At the start of my fourth year at San Diego State, I was told I wouldn't be accepted into the television, film and new media production major. That meant new lower division courses I didn't want to take for a major I didn't want to be in.
