Teachers at Sea

"It was this incredible itinerary that drew me to the program - to have the opportunity to experience far-off places that I never imagined I'd get to see, to explore the vast reaches of our planet."

—Matthew Shaffer, Summer 2005 & Spring 2007

Semester at Sea offers teachers the opportunity to add an international dimension to their classrooms at home.

Open to all certified K-12 teachers, Teachers at Sea participants are enrolled as visiting graduate students at the University of Virginia and have the opportunity to earn six graduate credits during summer voyages of Semester at Sea.

The Teachers at Sea program takes advantage of the academic resources provided by Semester at Sea to offer a learning experience for teachers that will enhance their ability to add an international dimension to their classrooms at home.

Teachers at Sea participants will enroll in two 3-credit courses and will have the option of enrolling in a third class. A graduate course in Education will be required for all participants, and Summer 2010 Teachers at Sea may choose either Integrating the Global Perspective across the K-12 Curriculum or International and Intercultural Dimensions of Teaching and Learning. For the second required course, all participants will attend the core course for the voyage, Global Studies, and will be enrolled in a graduate-level seminar related to the Global Studies course. This seminar will focus on developing curricula and instructional materials appropriate to the individual teacher's subject area(s) and grade level(s). Teachers at Sea participants may choose to enroll in a third class, choosing from the 50 undergraduate course offerings, representing a variety of disciplines, or they may select the other graduate education course listed above.
