Preparing for Your Most Valuable Semester

If you’ve started thinking about studying abroad, you already know that there’s a lot to consider. Here are a number of things to keep in mind as you prepare for your Semester at Sea experience.

Download the admissions checklist to help you navigate the process, and contact our Office of Admission for support along the way: admission@semesteratsea.org.

Take good classes on your home campus.

Studying on a ship can present some challenges in addition to those in the course syllabus. The best preparation is demonstrated by your past success in the classroom.

Meet with your school’s study abroad office.

Find out if your school requires any separate admission processes. Your study abroad advisor can also provide important direction in terms of meeting internal deadlines or making arrangements to transfer Semester at Sea credit back to your home campus.

Apply early.

The oldest advice is still the best. Taking a voyage of this magnitude takes considerable preparation. It’s best to give yourself as much time as possible to make all the necessary arrangements.

Meet with a Semester at Sea representative on your campus.

Come meet us at a study abroad fair or outreach event – we do these at many campuses all through the academic year.

Talk to your school’s financial aid office.

This usually isn’t on anyone’s list of fun ways to spend an afternoon, but it will give you important direction in terms of putting the pieces of the financing puzzle together.

Visit the ship.

Come to an Open Ship event to get to know the program from onboard our floating campus, the MV Explorer.

Talk with your family.

Participating in Semester at Sea is a big decision, and big decisions are made together with your family.
