This experience so far has been absolutely amazing! I'm still in shock that I'm actually traveling around the WORLD. I've already gained so many new experiences. It's my first time being on a ship, so I really didn't know what to expect. It surprised me how well maintained the ship is, and how much they have to offer. I worked out in the gym, played basketball, and went to pool--all on the ship. So far, this experience has surpassed my expectations and has been an adventure. This is the first time in my life where I am attending school and living in a setting where I'm a minority, so I was a little skeptical of how I would adapt to such a new environment, but I love everything about it. Everyone is really friendly, open, and easy to talk with. I've made a lot of friends and I can't wait to see where this adventure takes me. Read more on Kadir's blog. |

When I was admitted to Semester at Sea I had no clue about how I was going to finance this trip, all I knew was I was going to sail around the world for the best learning experience of my life. Being able to apply these funds means being able to complete a dream, a dream of learning and experiencing the situation of people in developing countries. I believe no person should live with injustice, poverty, or suffering. The only way we can solve such problems is to experience and observe them firsthand. This voyage means opening my mind to the millions of human beings in other countries. It means experiencing their lives to learn from them, to learn how they give meaning to their lives, to understand their points of view, and their issues so that one day I can dedicate my life to improve their lives. After this voyage I will no longer be part of the ignorance nor to the indifference to another person's suffering, because now they will be part of my life not only part of the world. Words cannot describe how much spending my fall 08 SEMESTER AT SEA really means to me! I am a graduating senior from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA and I felt this was my last chance to do something that would set me apart from the multitude of other college undergrads. This voyage is going to serve as one of my greatest accomplishments, however, receiving the diversity scholarship and being one of the FIRST scholars to initiate the diversity program is MONUMENTAL. Not only will I be able to assist with laying the foundation for what I hope to be a lasting legacy of "non-traditional SASers" but this program has so much potential to reach out to students like myself who would never even Dare to Dream about embarking on a journey such as this. The opportunity to participate in such a groundbreaking program is something that I, as a young black woman, hold very dear to my heart. I look forward to studying on Semester at Sea.
