2014 Founders Week:

Celebrate, Refer, & Share! October 19-25, 2014

On October 22, 1963, the first voyage of Semester at Sea, aboard the University of Seven Seas, sailed out of New York City. On behalf of the Institute for Shipboard Education and Semester at Sea we invite you to join your Semester at Sea, World Campus Afloat, and University of Seven Seas shipmates around the world in celebrating those who sailed before us and the legacy of more than 50 years of shipboard education! Join SAS alumni, future voyagers, parents, and friends to celebrate SAS Founders Week at events across the U.S.! Prospective students and their families are invited to attend to learn more about Semester at Sea.

A Week of Celebration Activities

Your participation in Founders Week events and efforts will help inspire prospective students, Lifelong Learners, faculty, and staff to sail with Semester at Sea. Encourage your fellow shipmates to participate!

Monday, October 20: Share Your Voyage Day

Sail back in time and share your voyage on social media! Dig up those old photos, journal entries, quotes, stories, and other meaningful moments or mementos and share them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, a personal blog, and/or any other online platform of your choice using #mySASmoment Many of you may not have had social media when you sailed, so now is your opportunity to show your friends your experience. Your special memories or photographs may be selected to be featured in an upcoming issue of Shipmates!

Tuesday, October 21: SAS Spirit Day

Shipmates, show your spirit! Whether it’s your voyage itinerary t-shirt, an SAS hat, or an article of clothing from one of the countries visited on your voyage, wear your Semester at Sea gear to show your pride. Make sure to get a photo of yourself to post on social media with #SASspiritday, and encourage your fellow shipmates to join in the fun!

Wednesday, October 22: Founders Day

Celebrate Founders Day, a day to honor the legacy of Semester at Sea. On October 22, 1963, the maiden voyage of Semester at Sea set sail from New York Harbor on a global adventure. From that first embarkation, Founders Day and Week was born, a celebration to recognize our program’s founding leaders through SAS alumni events and showing of shipmate spirit. Follow Semester at Sea on social media and the News from the Helm blog to reconnect with the ship in celebration of this historic day.

Thursday, October 23: Recruit & Refer Day

Today’s your day to recruit and refer students for Semester at Sea! Through simple online efforts or in-person at your alma mater, you can influence other students to have the once-in-a-lifetime experience that you once had. Get in touch with your alma mater and encourage them to post on their own social media about Semester at Sea and/or students from your school that have recently sailed. Reach out to your alma mater’s student newspaper or alumni publication and ask them to write about recent students or faculty that have sailed. Or, go to your campus and spread the word yourself! Be creative and let’s see who gets the most referrals! Use #RecruitforSAS to share your efforts on social media and inspire your fellow shipmates to recruit and refer, too.

Friday, October 24: Reconnect with Shipmates Day

TGIF- it’s time to party! Meet up with your local SAS Chapter, or spend some time with your favorite shipmates in Boston or other global hot spots!
