Sail on Semester at Sea's Historic 100th Voyage

GNGIn Fall 2009, Semester at Sea will mark its 100th voyage. To commemorate this important milestone and to celebrate our mission to educate individuals for leadership, service, and success, Semester at Sea will partner with Kentucky’s Prospect / Goshen Rotary Club and Global Nomads Group to execute an international service learning project called the $100 Solution. Entirely student-driven, the project aims to empower young people and communities through small acts of giving.

Don't miss your chance to experience multi-country study abroad with Semester at Sea. On all of our upcoming voyages you'll take the trip of a lifetime, travel to off-the-beaten path destinations, do meaningful field projects in port, and make friends all over the world. Make your semester abroad count!

Aboard the state-of-the-art MV Explorer - a ship that's been converted into a traveling college campus - you'll investigate the world's most important issues; gain valuable perspective through comparative analysis and cross-cultural exchanges; and earn a full semester of transferable credit from one of the United States' top institutions, the University of Virginia. Participants who choose Semester at Sea say it gave them international insight for landing a job and resulted in tangible benefits.

Turning $100 into a World of Change: the $100 Solution

The $100 Solution service learning project poses a simple question: "What can you do to enhance the quality of life in a community?" A project of the Rotary Club that started in 2005, students learn problem-solving skills and improve the lives of others through gifts of $100 to individuals and communities.

Goat Project
In a Dalit Village outside Chennai, India, $100 bought five goats for the village's neediest families and helped put them on the road to self-sufficiency.
Orphanage Project
In Ho Chi Minh, Viet Nam, $100 helped buy a water heater at an Agent Orange Orphanage, allowing children to take hot baths for the first time.

On the Fall 2009 voyage of Semester at Sea, students in two courses will lead $100 Solution projects in Viet Nam and India. Stay tuned to the Semester at Sea website to see what projects students initiate to help individuals around the world.
