About Staff Positions

The Institute hires about 35 staff positions for each voyage. All positions are filled on a temporary basis and for one voyage only. We seek applicants who are committed to the concept of academic and personal enrichment through travel and education and who recognize that the academic program and the safety of all participants take the highest priority when decisions are made. Prior to contacting our office with employment questions, we ask that you carefully review the information on this site, which should address many of your questions.

Applicants should recognize the following:

  • Working on Semester at Sea can be physically demanding as many positions do not have set hours.
  • Personal and family time and space can be limited.
  • Maximum flexibility, cooperation, and adaptability to a fast-paced work environment are essential to a successful Semester at Sea experience.
  • For many positions, work experience in a higher education academic setting is preferred.
  • Proficiency with email, Microsoft word processing, and other computer skills is a requirement for many positions.
  • All staff members report to the Executive Dean, who maintains overall administrative authority over the program during the course of the voyage.
  • In addition to regularly assigned duties, you will be expected to be an integral part of the shipboard community which includes attendance in the Global Studies course and other onboard educational and social activities, as your work schedule permits. Some staff may be asked to serve on a limited number of in-port activities as official representatives of Semester at Sea and as trip leaders.
