Siân Davies-Vollum was born and educated in the UK, with a BA and Ph.D. in Geology from Oxford
University, and an M.Sc. in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, London. She spent
eighteen years as an academic in the U.S., most recently as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of
the Environmental Science Program at the University of Washington-Tacoma (UWT). In January 2013
she returned to England as Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Geography and the Environment at
Sheffield Hallam University. Her research focuses on understanding ancient environments from the
sedimentological record, with particular emphasis on rivers and deltas. She has conducted field research
in North America and Europe, and has participated in field trips in South America, South Africa and Asia.
Professor Davies-Vollum has taught many courses in environmental science and geology, including field courses
in the US and UK, and has published a number of pedagogical research papers on curriculum and course
design. She taught on the summer 2003, fall 2009 and summer 2011 SAS voyages.
