Student Affairs at Sea

Sail Abroad in Summer 2011

Semester at Sea offers a unique shipboard living/learning community where students, faculty, staff, and lifelong learners immerse themselves in the quest for multi-cultural understanding and global awareness. In Summer 2011, Student Affairs graduate students will have the opportunity to explore firsthand the area of student affairs in the contexts of higher education, undergraduate study abroad, and shipboard education while earning transferable graduate credits from the University of Virginia.

Program Description

This academically and experientially oriented course will examine and discuss a wide variety of approaches to internationalization and globalization of higher education in the context of the countries visited during the Summer 2011 Semester at Sea voyage. Dates of the voyage are June 17 - August 20, 2011.

This is a unique opportunity for students in higher education and student affairs graduate programs to study abroad and sail aboard the MV Explorer during the Summer 2011 voyage. The course and voyage will entail classroom work, field-based university visits, and internship experiences.  In-class and field experiences will combine to create a unique opportunity for students to learn about higher education and student affairs in three contexts:

  • student affairs and higher education in international contexts
  • with and among the 700 undergraduate students onboard the MV Explorer and in the United States
  • The course is designed such that students and instructors share equally and collaboratively with the institutions visited during the voyage.

Internship

Enrolled students in the Student Affairs at Sea cohort are eligible to apply for a paid internship. The interns are matched with the full-time student affairs voyage staff and assist with student affairs duties on the voyage. Internships are valued at $2000 and require three hours of work per day at sea.  Detailed information on internships will be posted in January, 2011.
