Sail Abroad in Summer 2010
Semester at Sea offers a unique shipboard living/learning community where students, faculty, staff, and lifelong learners immerse themselves in the quest for multi-cultural understanding and global awareness. In Summer 2010, Student Affairs graduate students will have the opportunity to explore firsthand the area of student affairs in the contexts of higher education, undergraduate study abroad, and shipboard education while earning transferable graduate credits from the University of Virginia.
Program Description
This academically and experientially oriented course is designed to introduce students to international and comparative aspects of higher education and student affairs. The wide variety of approaches to internationalization and globalization of higher education will be examined and discussed in the context of the countries visited during the Summer 2010 Semester at Sea voyage. Dates of the voyage are June 15 - August 21, 2010.
This is a unique opportunity for students in higher education and student affairs graduate programs to study abroad and sail aboard the MV Explorer during the Summer 2010 voyage. The course and voyage will entail classroom work, field-based university visits, and internship experiences.
In-class and field experiences will combine to create a unique opportunity for students to learn about higher education and student affairs in three contexts:
- student affairs and higher education in international contexts
- with the 700 undergraduate students onboard the MV Explorer and in the United States
- The course is designed such that students and instructors share equally and collaboratively with the institutions visited during the voyage. The course will be underscored with a social justice philosophy emphasizing reciprocity, respect, and international cooperation.
