Institute for Shipboard Education Launches Student Affairs at Sea Program

Semester at Sea offers a unique shipboard living/learning community where students, faculty, staff, and lifelong learners immerse themselves in the quest for multi-cultural understanding and global awareness. Starting with the Summer 2010 voyage, Student Affairs graduate students will have the opportunity to explore firsthand the area of student affairs in the contexts of higher education, undergraduate study abroad, and shipboard education while earning transferable graduate credits from the University of Virginia, through the launch of a new Student Affairs at Sea program. New Audio Slideshow: 100th Voyage Students in Morocco

An audio slideshow entitled Sunset in the Sahara depicts the 100th Voyage's academic travels and experiences throughout Morocco. Participants experienced the culture of Marrakech, sampled foods and met with host nationals, as well as explored the Sahara Desert as part of a four-day trek on camel-back that brought them into contact with Nomadic settlers. The slideshow includes student remarks about the hands-on global education experience provided by Semester at Sea.

September 15, 2009: A new slideshow with audio about Cadiz, Spain shows fall 2009 students exploring the ancient sites of Andalucia, including the Cathedral of Christendom, which houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus, and the Alcazar. Experiences and pictures of the 100th Voyage community during an Andalucian Flamenco Night can be seen on the SAS Voyage Blog.

August 28, 2009: The 100th Voyage sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia today with 516 undergraduates representing 225 colleges and universities; 30 lifelong learners; and 67 faculty and staff. Institute for Shipboard Education Announces H1N1 Influenza Pandemic Contingency Plan

August 27, 2009: As the Institute for Shipboard Education prepares to send off the 100th Voyage of Semester at Sea, worldwide concerns over the spread of the H1N1 (swine flu) have triggered the implementation of a specific contingency plan as part of an ISE/SAS H1N1 Influenza Pandemic Contingency Plan. ISE officials, the captain and crew, medical staff, and experts are working closely with international and local public health offices to prepare for any potential outbreak.
