Parents Council Chairs Give Advice for Future Parents of SAS Participants

Watching the MV Explorer campus sail far into the distance, with your child aboard, is an emotional experience for parents. Dwight and Jane Allison, founders of the Semester at Sea Parents Council, know the feeling all too well. The image describes a memory from 2005 when their oldest son, Dewey, sailed with Semester at Sea from Vancouver, B.C. Semester at Sea Participant Receives Prestigious Udall Scholarship

April 15, 2010: This fall, Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu will bring his special insight to the 103rd voyage of Semester at Sea when he and his wife Leah set sail for their second full voyage. Tutu, 78, will help launch the first Desmond Tutu Distinguished Chair in Global Understanding, a program established to honor his lifelong contributions to global awareness and intercultural understanding. Judith A. Mayotte, Ph.D., a colleague and long-time acquaintance of Tutu, has been named the inaugural chair. {More»}

February 21, 2010: The incident you may have heard about over the weekend involved The Concordia, a small yacht that is part of the Nova Scotia-based Class Afloat program. The media often describe any ship-based program as "a semester at sea" and there is no connection between this program and ours. The Institute for Shipboard Education is a leading provider of global education and has launched more than 100 voyages over its successful 48-year history. Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Sail on Entire Fall 2010 Voyage

The Institute for Shipboard Education is pleased to announce that Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu will sail aboard the entire Fall 2010 voyage of Semester at Sea. "Semester at Sea is a wonderful educational experience that can help to promote global peace and understanding around the world. The value of seeing the world and its people firsthand, gaining a sense of its interconnectedness, helping others, seeing poverty and hardship, developing a compassion for others—this is such a valuable educational experience for our young people." Archbishop Tutu has participated in the SAS program on numerous occasions, sailing on the Spring 2007 voyage and partial voyages in both 1984 and 2005.

Weather Delays Current Voyage Arrival to Japan

February 7, 2010: To avoid heavy weather conditions en route to Japan, the arrival to Yokohama is expected to be delayed at least 12 hours. All Spring 2010 participants will be informed of the delay and any updates will be posted to the SAS website.

Student Affairs at Sea, a combination of academic coursework, field experiences, and internships, will introduce students and professionals to international and comparative aspects of higher education and student affairs. Program participants will benefit from their exposure to student affairs in international and shipboard contexts. This experience, a truly unique academic program, will expand perspectives and understanding about what is it like to work in higher education and student affairs. Read more.

January 17, 2010: The 101st Semester at Sea voyage set sail from Ensenada, Mexico today with 584 undergraduates representing 239 colleges and universities; 23 lifelong learners; and 67 faculty and staff. The voyage will explore the academic theme Sustainability: One Earth, One Future during its 109-day voyage to 10 countries around the world.
