The Institute for Shipboard Education invites adventurers of all ages to explore 9 ports of call on the Amazon Expedition Enrichment Voyage December 18, 2008 through January 8, 2009. Participants will cruise on the Amazon River and explore the Southern Caribbean on one of the world's fastest cruise ships, the MV Explorer. This unique learning opportunity offers adventurous in-port excursions and optional onboard Enrichment Sessions.
The Amazon Expedition begins in Nassau, Bahamas on December 18 traveling to ports-of-call that include St. Barthelemey, St. Barts; Bridgetown, Barbados; Manaus, Brazil; Santarem, Brazil; Port of Spain, Trinidad; Roseau, Dominica; St. Kitts; Frederiksted, St. Croix; Puerto Plata, and Dominican Republic before finally docking in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on January 8. Cruise the Amazon River, the world’s second longest river, and witness the extraordinary biodiversity of the rainforest. Other opportunities include relaxing beach trips, whale watching, culture performances, and city tours. For the adventurous traveler, zip lining, kayaking, river tubing, snorkeling, and hiking are offered.
Enrichment Sessions aboard the MV Explorer will include discussions on oceanography, Caribbean music, biodiversity, cultural traditions, and Spanish lessons. Participants will travel with all the comforts and amenities of a traditional cruise ship, including a two dining rooms, wellness center, outdoor swimming pool, sports court, fitness center, 8,000-volume library, computer lab, and wireless Internet access.
The Institute for Shipboard Education administers Enrichment Voyages along with its Semester at Sea® study abroad program. The University of Virginia is the academic sponsor. Enrichment Voyages are open to the general public and are designed to provide a shorten version of the popular Semester at Sea program.
