The Academic Experience of a Lifetime
Our Program

An Unparalleled Learning Experience

Semester at Sea has served as a pioneer in multiple-country, comparative education for more than 50 years. Global comparative education is a form of international study that identifies and connects the world’s peoples, patterns, cultures and traditions.

Throughout the semester, disciplines and thematic issues are viewed cross-culturally and from a global perspective.

Our Academic Partner

On June 1, 2016, Colorado State University became the new academic partner for Semester at Sea. Founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution, CSU combines intellectual classroom pursuits with hands-on experience in the field and laboratory— similar in approach to the Semester at Sea global comparative experiential learning model.

As the recipient of the 2013 Senator Paul Simon National Award for Outstanding Campus Internationalization, its significant role in the founding of the Peace Corps, and its emphasis on the importance of diversity and global education, CSU is an ideal partner for the SAS program.

Global Courses and Credits

Semester at Sea offers an unparalleled educational program in conjunction with our academic partner, Colorado State University. Our 70+ courses on Semester at Sea are fully accredited, and meet the generally accepted standards for transfer. The academic partner appoints the academic dean from among their most accomplished faculty, approves all course designs, field classes and syllabi on Semester at Sea prior to sailing. SAS credit easily transfers to most schools.

A Global Curriculum

Courses

Semester at Sea offers up to 75 courses across several disciplines of study that reflect the expertise of the faculty member and the itinerary. Students choose courses that align with their majors or are able to explore a new field of study that interests them.

Field Classes

Every course includes one in-country educational field class designed for experiential learning. Field classes present the opportunity both for the professor and the participant to engage in further dedicated learning and discovery in each country. A field class takes place during a full 8-hour port day and the same expectations are placed on a field class day as placed on a class day at sea.

Cultivating Global Citizenship

Semester at Sea students are bright, thoughtful and involved young thinkers, eager to gain a deeper understanding of the world. Students of all majors and backgrounds have found that the academic program not only fits the requirements of their majors, but goes far beyond that to magnify their knowledge of the world and their commitment to global understanding.
