Asia Day
Asia Day
[February 8, 2010] In the 10 days, since leaving Hawai'i, Semester at Sea voyagers have readjusted to the routine of days at sea. Up for breakfast, A Day and B Day classes, lunch, afternoon classes, dinner, Explorer Seminars, homework and hanging out with
friends,
But today, we broke that routine as we celebrated Asia Day – a chance to learn about the history, culture of the three Asian countries we will be visiting during the next three weeks. Our fellow shipmates – students, faculty and staff - presented 25 separate seminars designed to inform, enlighten and provide useful advice for our upcoming travels in Japan, China, and Vietnam.
First generation Vietnamese Americans shared their family’s experiences of coming to the United States. Chinese students from Fudan University in Shanghai presented a fast-paced overview of ethnic music, modern fashion, classic opera, martial
arts, paper cutting and more. A Japanese shipmate gave her personal reflection of growing up in Japan.
Seminars explored topics ranging from Buddhist philosophy, the art of meditation, and Asian etiquette to flower arranging and calligraphy. Our Japanese interport students gave their tips for traveling in Japan while other presenters gave their advice about where to walk and jog in Asia, and hints for simple, memorable things to do in each port.
In concert with classroom experiences of the past three weeks, Asia day has provided a solid base of information for Spring 2010 Semester at Sea Voyagers as they leave the ship tomorrow to explore Japan for themselves.
