International Teamwork: The Importance of Service on Semester at Sea

During each Semester at Sea voyage, as part of the international field program, participants have the opportunity to take part in more than 30 service projects and none is more popular than Habitat for Humanity. While in Cape Town, South Africa Semester at Sea students had the opportunity to help construct a home in a nearby township. Sustaining Wildlife

At first glance, it looks like a small zoo with fenced areas for cheetahs, caracals, jackals, large dogs and raptors. But as Semester at Sea participants in the Animal Whispers field program found out, this is home to two projects focused on sustaining South African wildlife.

As an island paradise, Mauritius lives up to its reputation with inviting beaches, crystal clear waters, lush vegetation, and majestic mountains. The economy is booming with construction, tourism, manufacturing, and an emerging high-tech sector supplementing the historic cane sugar agricultural market. As the nation has developed, so has the awareness of the needs of women in Mauritius. The issues are not unique - education, training, parenting skills, and social support. While in Mauritius, a Semester at Sea field program spent a day visiting agencies and organizations that are beginning to address some of those needs.
