When 90-some Semester at Sea voyagers left Shanghai on a field program destined for Beijing, the excitement was high in anticipation of visiting the Heavenly Temple, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.  However, for many one of the memorable experiences was a side trip to an orphanage on the outskirts of Beijing.

This audio slideshow on Hong Kong documents the professor-led field excursion, "Sustainable Living: Is High-Density the New Green?" More than 40 percent of Hong Kong, a city of 7 million inhabitants, is designated as open space. Watch as students explore a seven-mile trail within the heart of the urban center and consider the following questions: How and why was it possible to protect so much land from development? What considerations motivated this choice: were they primarily ecological, economic or political? What consequences has the policy had for the city, its people, and its natural environment? Should Hong Kong serve as a model for other urban communities?

Buying a parrot, obtaining an ornamental plant, purchasing a wool scarf, or utilizing traditional ethnic.medicines may all seem like a harmless acts.  But the uninformed purchase of some of these products may contribute to the extinction of threatened plant and animal species.
