Spring 2012 Sea Olympics

The Summer Olympics won’t start until July, but the MV Explorer got a jump start this week with its own epic, all-encompassing tournament known as the Sea Olympics.

While the MV Explorer sliced through the flat-as-glass waters of the Bay of Bengal, the shipboard community supplied a blast of activity in an otherwise tranquil Sea. The Sea Olympics turns the ship into a floating arena and an all-day slate of activities gives everyone an opportunity to represent their home sea. At the start of the voyage, students are split into “seas,” which are essentially smaller communities of students who all reside in the same area of the ship. Or that’s usually the case. During the Sea Olympics, neighbors become teammates and everything takes on an immense level of seriousness.

The Sea Olympics has been a Semester at Sea staple for over a decade. Much like years past, the competitions ranged from the standard (soccer and volleyball) to the outrageous (potato carving and reverse spelling bee). After 20 events in one day, added to the results from the already-announced King and Queen of the Sea, the Aegean Sea topped the ten-team battle for supremacy and became the official champions of the S12 Sea Olympics.
