Bios
Robert Atkinson
Robert Atkinson, Human Development. Robert Atkinson is professor of human development, director of the Life Story Center, and senior research fellow in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute National Resource Center at the University of Southern Maine. He is the author, co-author, or editor of eight books, including: Latino Voices in New England (2009); his memoir Remembering 1969: Searching for the Eternal in Changing Times (2008); The Beat of My Drum: An Autobiography (with Babatunde Olatunji, 2005); The Life Story Interview (1998; translated into Italian, 2002, and Romanian, 2006); and, The Gift of Stories: Practical and Spiritual Applications of Autobiography, Life Stories, and Personal Mythmaking (1995; translated into Japanese, 2005). His next book, Remembering Who We Are: Reviewing Our Life Story, Reclaiming Our Spiritual Heritage will be out early next year. Dr. Atkinson will present a series of Enrichment Sessions on approaches to remembering and telling our life stories.

Anna Brickhouse is Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Virginia. She holds a PhD from Columbia University. Her book, Transamerican Literary Relations and the Nineteenth-Century Public Sphere (Cambridge 2004) won the Gustave Arlt Award as well as an honorable mention from the American Studies Association. She has published in PMLA, American Literary History, and African American Review, among other venues. Dr. Brickhouse sailed as a faculty member on the Summer 2007 Semester at Sea voyage. She will provide Enrichment Sessions on Latin American literature.

Ciel Duke, Artist-in-Residence. Ciel will provide art workshops such as sketching, water colors, and copper tooling. Ms. Duke will also provide lectures on the artists, Frida Kahlo and Earl Bailly. Recently retired from 25 years of teaching high school Art and Math, Ms. Duke has launched an active painting career, with recent one-woman shows in Nova Scotia, where she spends several months each year, and gallery showings in Alaska and Arizona. Ciel Duke has shared her art with many audiences, and she has often remarked, "Anyone can learn to draw." After participating in Ciel's workshops, many participants have come away with a big boost in their artistic confidence and with the feeling that Ciel's statement just might be true!

Rita Enders, Technology. Rita will provide Enrichment Sessions on some hot topics in today's technological world such as Blogging, Digital Photography, File Management and making self-published "books" of one's travels. Rita loves teaching and has spent the past ten years as a computer instructor for Elderhostel, Gateway Computers, and the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California. Rita also offers private lessons in homes and businesses across the Coachella Valley in a variety of computer-based subjects including Microsoft Office applications, digital music, photography and videography.

Bruce Holsinger is Professor of English and Music at the University of Virginia and currently serves as Associate Dean for Humanities and the Arts in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Primarily a scholar of medieval European culture, he has published a number of books on topics from early music to the war on terror to contemporary film. He has won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Guggenheim Foundation. He will present an enrichment session on the medieval legacy to the colonial Americas.

Fred Levine, Art History. Fred Levine is Professor of Art History at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA. He has authored numerous publications and spoken widely on a vast range of issues in art and cultural studies both in the United States and overseas. Levine completed his undergraduate studies at New York University and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. He has taught at the University of Texas, Austin, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. As a Fellow in Art History at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia he explored a vast range of Aboriginal sacred sites in often remote areas throughout the country. Fred has lectured on cruise ships for twenty years, including the past thirteen years as Art and Architecture lecturer with Crystal Cruises and has sailed more than 100 voyages. He has traveled extensively visiting more than 80 countries on six continents.and has taught two Semester Abroad programs at the University of London.

Richard Lozinsky, Geology and Geography. Richard Lozinsky is a Professor of Earth Sciences at Fullerton College in Orange County, California. He received a B.S. (Geology) and a B.A. (Geography) from Humboldt State University, and a M.S. (Geology) from the University of New Mexico and Ph.D. (Geology) from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Dr. Lozinsky teaches a variety of courses in geology and oceanography specializing in natural disasters and field studies. He has written several natural history field guides on portions of New Mexico and Southern California. His most recent publication is a geological guide of the Orange County area. With extensive worldwide traveling experience including two Semester at Sea voyages (Spring, 1999 and Fall, 2003), Dr. Lozinsky greatly enjoys working closely with individuals to have geology come alive for them. One of his major teaching themes is that "geology goes wherever you go". His enrichment sessions will focus on Central American weather and ocean patterns.

Louis Patler, Organizational Development, Leadership and Innovation. Award-winning author, speaker and consultant, Louis Patler is President of the B.I.T. Consulting Group, a strategic and organizational development company. Louis brings pioneering technologies for identifying emerging business and consumer trends, organization culture/integration solutions, and strategic initiatives to Fortune 500 companies, multi-national corporations and foreign governments. England's BBC-TV, SKY-TV and Canada's CBC-Radio praised him as one of America's new breed of business thought leaders and J. Walter Thompson Agency named him one of "The 20 Most Creative Minds in America." Louis has held faculty positions at three universities and lectured at schools such as the University of San Francisco, Stanford University and Mendoza School of Business, Notre Dame. He will present Enrichment Sessions on Business Strategies at Work in Latin America, Trends in Social and Economic Leadership Styles, and Emergent Global Perspectives/ Generational Values.

Allan Schoenherr, Biology, Environmental Science. Allan is a retired Professor of Ecology at Fullerton College in southern California. He also has taught a variety of ecology classes at the University of California, Irvine, and California State University at Fullerton. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Southern California, and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He was honored as Teacher of the Year (2000) at Fullerton College. An accomplished nature photographer, he has provided the photographs to illustrate his books and has received two awards for his images of California Gray Whales. His academic interests are in ecology, evolution, biogeography, and endangered species. His enrichment sessions will include Whales and Other Marine Mammals, Wildlife of Tropical Forests, Island Wildlife and Environmental/Ecology Issues in Central America.

Dr. Waas is an Emeritus Professor of History at Manchester College. He has taught on Semester at Sea three times as well as lecturing on other cruises. As Executive Director of the Indiana Consortium for International Programs he has directed many overseas faculty enrichment programs for the United States Department of Education and for the consortium. His interest in Mexico and Central America has centered upon both the cultural and political history of the region as well how it has been impacted by US policy. David’s enrichment sessions will focus on the Panama Canal, the people and culture of Panama, and the creation of Central America.

Toby Zinman, Literature and Film. Dr. Zinman serves as Professor of English at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Recipient of several teaching awards, and author of numerous books and articles in scholarly journals, Dr. Zinman lectures internationally on contemporary drama. In addition to her "day job," she is also a nationally-known arts journalist and the chief theatre critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, the city's major daily newspaper. Her lectures will focus on books and films made in and/or about Central America. She will also hold book club discussions for interested participants.
