Allan Schoenherr
Allan Schoenherr, Biology, Environmental Science. Allan is a retired Professor of Ecology at Fullerton College in southern California. He also has taught a variety of ecology classes at the University of California, Irvine, and California State University at Fullerton. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Southern California, and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He was honored as Teacher of the Year (2000) at Fullerton College. A recognized authority on California, he is the author of two major books on the state. A Natural History of California (University of California Press, 1992) is a compendium on the plants, animals, and geology of California. His more recent publication, Natural History of the Islands of California (University of California Press, 1999), is a discussion of all the islands of California including those in San Francisco Bay. He is coauthor of the third edition of The Terrestrial Vegetation of California. An accomplished nature photographer, he has provided the photographs to illustrate his books and he has received two awards for his images of California Gray Whales. His academic interests are in ecology, evolution, biogeography, and endangered species. Toby Zinman
Toby Zinman, Literature and Film. Dr. Zinman serves as Professor of English at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Recipient of several teaching awards, and author of numerous books and articles in scholarly journals, Dr. Zinman lectures internationally on contemporary drama. In addition to her "day job," she is also a nationally-known arts journalist and the chief theatre critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, the city's major daily newspaper. Her lectures will focus on books and films made in and/or about the Caribbean. She will also hold book club discussions for interested participants. May 2010 Enrichment Voyage Lecture Topics:
Rita Enders
Rita Enders, Technology. Rita will provide Enrichment Sessions on some hot topics in today's technological world such as Blogging, Digital Photography, File Management and making self-published "books" of one's travels. Rita loves teaching and has spent the past ten years as a computer instructor for Elderhostel, Gateway Computers, and the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California. Rita also offers private lessons in homes and businesses across the Coachella Valley in a variety of computer-based subjects including Microsoft Office applications, digital music, photography and videography. Ciel Duke
Ciel Duke, Artist-in-Residence. Ciel will provide art workshops such as sketching, water colors, and copper tooling. Ms. Duke will also provide lectures on the artists, Frida Kahlo and Earl Bailly. Recently retired from 25 years of teaching high school Art and Math, Ms. Duke has launched an active painting career, with recent one-woman shows in Nova Scotia, where she spends several months each year, and gallery showings in Alaska and Arizona. Ciel Duke has shared her art with many audiences, and she has often remarked, "Anyone can learn to draw." After participating in Ciel's workshops, many participants have come away with a big boost in their artistic confidence and with the feeling that Ciel's statement just might be true! Iain Campbell
Iain Campbell, Biology and Astronomy. Dr. Campbell earned a B.Sc. (1st class honors and dux) and Ph.D., both in chemistry, from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Recently retired from the University of Pittsburgh, his teaching record includes courses in marine biology, biochemistry, microbiology, infectious diseases, biological and cosmic evolution, general biology, biochemistry, astronomy, the Protestant Reformation and Scottish malt whiskey. He has received the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award, Tina and David Bellet Teaching Excellence Award, University of Pittsburgh and the Smith Memorial Prize, University of Glasgow. On the Enrichment Voyages, he will offer sessions on Astronomy, Birds of the Caribbean, and to celebrate Darwin's 200th birthday, "In the Wake of the Beagle: A Look at Evolution." Ricardo Padron
Ricardo Padron, History and Literature. Ricardo Padron (Ph.D., Harvard University; M.A., University of Chicago; B.A., University of Virginia) is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Virginia. He is in his twelfth year of teaching at U.Va., where he offers graduate and undergraduate courses on the literature and culture of the early modern Hispanic world, courses on Don Quixote and an on the cultural history of the conquest of the Americas. He has carried out research in Spain, and has lived part of his life in Ecuador, his native country. His research on narrative and cartographic expressions of the Spanish imperial imagination has been supported by various grants and fellowships, including one from the American Council of Learned Societies. Mary Lendway
Mary Lendway, Tourism. Mary is Professor and Program Coordinator of the Tourism Management Program at the School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism, Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Toronto, Canada. Mary holds an MBA in Tourism and Hospitality Management from the University of Guelph. She is a seasoned tourism industry professional, has successfully started and managed a retail travel service and tour operations business, and has been a key player in large event organization and management. Jill Mott
Jill Mott, Sommelier. After graduating from college, Jill moved to La Rioja, Spain where the vine got the best of her. Since then she has worked in almost every sector of the wine industry. Jill is currently an assistant wine maker and a private wine consultant. She is a sommelier at Webster's Wine Bar in Chicago, as well as an instructor for the International Sommelier Guild. In her spare time, Jill has a passion for travel (especially if there are vineyards involved). Jill's Enrichment Sessions will touch on different topics regarding wine to include pairing food & wine, history of wine, how to taste wine, and wine basics.
