Semester at Sea Participant Killed in Hong Kong (Updated) Semester at Sea Participant Killed in Hong Kong (Updated)
November 7, 2008: The Institute for Shipboard Education is deeply saddened to report that Semester at Sea participant Kurt Leswing, 21, was tragically struck and killed by a motor vehicle early this morning while traveling in Hong Kong. Reports by local Hong Kong authorities indicate the driver of the vehicle that struck Kurt was driving while intoxicated. The driver was arrested at the scene.
The U.S. Consul General in Hong Kong and the Institute for Shipboard Education are working closely to investigate the case. Kurt's family has been informed and our thoughts and prayers are with them, and the entire fall 2008 shipboard community, during this difficult time.
Kurt is originally from Milwaukee, Wis. and was a senior business major at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He is described by Semester at Sea staff as a gentle, kind, and easy-going person who cared about others and had a thoughtful and consoling nature.
During the fall 2008 voyage, Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu visited the Semester at Sea ship during its stopover in Cape Town, South Africa. Kurt is said to have been especially touched by the Archbishop's address, often sharing the following quotation with family and friends: "Take the anger from your hearts. Wipe the tears from God's eyes. And live a life of love."
He is survived by his parents, who reside in Milwaukee, and twin brother, Tait.
"This terrible tragedy reminds us of the value of every human life and how fragile it is. Each of us who knew Kurt must try to remember him in a way that honors his life and the contributions he made to our community," said Jack Van De Water, executive dean of the fall 2008 voyage.
Shipboard administrators, living-learning coordinators, and counselors have announced a gathering of all members of the community who are seeking support. A shipboard commemoration is being planned. More details will be forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Kurt's name be sent to Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 1100 North Astor Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202. Kurt's mother tells us that Kurt was baptized and confirmed in this church, and the community of faith there is holding the family together through this tragic time.
