USNH Partners with ISE to offer Three Annual Scholarships USNH Partners with ISE to offer Three Annual Scholarships
ISE will support annual scholarships for one student from the University of New Hampshire, one student from Plymouth State University, and one student from Keene State College, for a total of three scholarships per year. Eligible students will be New Hampshire residents that pay in-state tuition, are enrolled full time, are juniors or seniors, and who qualify for a USNH Affordable College Effort (ACE) Award based on income and enrollment criteria.
"We are delighted to be a part of this effort with the University System of New Hampshire to make the Semester at Sea academic experience a reality for all qualifying participants," said Les McCabe, president of ISE/SAS.
The first three scholarships will be awarded for the fall 2009 semester. Interested students must be ACE-eligible, have completed at least one full year of academic work, meet certain educational criteria, and have an interest in global issues. Beyond the financial requirements, ACE-eligible students must be New Hampshire residents attending a USNH institution full time.
In addition, students who receive the scholarship will also receive a $2,000 award from the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center to help cover the costs of travel to and from the ship and at the various ports of call, passport and visa costs, and expenses related to books and learning materials. These additional funds will enable the participants to take better advantage of this international learning experience.
The ACE Awards were established in late 2005 to assist New Hampshire residents attending a residential USNH institution as a full-time freshman within one year of graduating from high school and for which the expected family contribution (EFC) is under $1,000. Combined with other grants and college work study funds, the direct cost to attend-which includes standard tuition, fees, room, and board-will be fully met. The program was expanded to eligible students in their sophomore year in 2007 and eligible juniors in 2008. About 200 students currently receive the awards, and this number is expected to increase once the third year of eligibility is added for students attending this fall.
"This is an invaluable and life-changing opportunity for students who typically could not take advantage of a semester abroad, let alone the Semester at Sea program," said USNH Chancellor Stephen Reno. "I'm very excited that ISE is offering these scholarships and look forward to hearing first-hand about the learning experiences our students will have during this educational journey."
ISE awards $2.6 million in financial aid annually. Last year's ACE Awards averaged about $5,500 for the year, or $2,750 a semester. The ISE scholarships range from $8,000-10,000 per student, depending on which USNH institution they are attending.
