Alumni Sail Again

MV Explorer
The MV Explorer in port

Twenty years passed since I sailed as a Resident Director (now known as Living Learning Coordinators) on Semester at Sea. To celebrate this twenty-year milestone, several of my shipmates had signed-up for last year’s SAS Reunion Voyage. We enjoyed sharing photos and memories of our voyage –the one that changed its itinerary due to the first Persian Gulf War.

Several shipmates brought their families along.  One alumna sailed with her 4th grade son.  He had participated in the Vicarious Voyage program and was learning about the world by tracking the itineraries of the MV Explorer.  As a Christmas gift, his parents “gave” him a SAS Reunion Voyage and he and his mother sailed with 500+ other alumni from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  Something tells me he will sail again in 10 years!

It’s hard to believe another year has sailed by (no pun intended) and my staff and I are preparing for another Reunion Voyage departing tomorrow from Nassau, Bahamas to San Juan, Puerto Rico.  More than 400 alumni will board the MV Explorer with well-worn passports in hand and, for some of us, Scopolamine patches behind our ears for seasickness. Everyone will receive cabin assignments and field excursion green sheets, just as we did years ago. On-ship time will be 1800 hours and then we set sail our Voyage. What memories will be created on this Voyage?
