Photographing Lucca in Focus

When does a photograph become more than just a tourist snapshot? As travelers, we always try to take a picture of the perfect sunset or the beautiful landscapes and often miss capturing the stories inherent to places rich with life and beauty.

In the Tuscany region of Italy, moments of beauty are abundant from one city to the next. There are several places worth photographing in Tuscany, but Lucca stands tall above the rest behind old Renaissance-era walls that have preserved historic icons, stories and traditions for hundreds of years. Professor David Woody from the University of Virginia is teaching students in his documentary photography class the skills necessary to achieve great photographs in unfamiliar places and recently, they traveled into the heart of Lucca to capture the essence of life on camera and turn photographs into something more than just a tourist snapshot.
