ISE President to Chair Forum on Sustainability Solutions

ISE President and CEO, Scott Marshall shares an update on the Semester at Sea mission during a voyage embarkation.

ISE President to chair 2nd American Greentech and Decarbonizing Shipping Forum in Miami

Scott Marshall, president and CEO of the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE), will chair the American Greentech and Decarbonizing Shipping Forum next month in Miami, Florida. The forum is designed to connect leaders in the shipping, ship building, and maritime travel industries to the issues, innovations, cutting-edge technologies and solutions helping move the industry toward a greener and more sustainable future.

Marshall will open the event by detailing ISE’s ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions in its operations. Now in its 59th year, the institute administers Semester at Sea, a study abroad program that takes more than 1,000 gap year, undergraduate, and recent college graduate students, as well as mid- and late-career professionals, families and retirees, on 100+ day voyages that span more than 10 countries.

Students on each voyage earn college credits while taking courses through Colorado State University, Semester at Sea’s academic partner. The MV World Odyssey, a 600-berth and 22,496-ton vessel, is the program’s “floating college” home.

In his role as chair of this fall’s forum, Marshall will also welcome and introduce an impressive list of industry leaders appearing at the event. These include:

  • Anshul Tuteja, Associate Vice President for Global Marine Operations with Royal Caribbean Group
  • Angelica Sogor, Manager of Marine Safety & Training at Carnival Cruise Line
  • Jill Stoneberg, Director of Social Impact and Sustainability at Virgin Voyages
  • Maarten Poort, General Manager for Shipping and Maritime Americas with Shell
  • Dirk Kronemeijer, CEO of GoodFuels and the GoodShipping program

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this important event and to be among those investing their time, ideas and resources in developing the sustainable practices and partnerships that our industries and world need,” Marshall said. “And personally, I’m excited to be in the room with several companies and individuals who have already embraced Semester at Sea, offered ideas and enthusiasm—and introduced me to this opportunity.” – ISE President and CEO, Scott Marshall

Last month, Semester at Sea embarked on its 140th voyage with 446 students aboard from 247 colleges and universities and 42 countries. Leaving from Amsterdam, this semester’s itinerary includes stops in 11 countries across 3 continents over 105 days. Having visited Lisbon, Portugal, and Casablanca, Morocco, in the last two weeks, the MV World Odyssey is currently bound for Valencia, Spain, arriving for a five-day port on the morning of October 4. Students will disembark in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Dec. 22. (See a detailed itinerary.)
