Health and Safety of Participants Remains #1 Priority for Semester at Sea and Enrichment Voyages

The Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) is committed to protecting the health and safety of its Semester at Sea and Enrichment Voyages participants. With a history spanning nearly 50 years, ISE is well-established in the maritime industry, partners with leading fleet management firm V.Ships to optimize shipboard operations, and continuously invests in upgrades and technological improvements aboard the MV Explorer to ensure excellence in facilities, navigation, security, and communications.

Built in 2002 by world-renowned German shipbuilders Blohm + Voss and sailing at up to 28 knots, the MV Explorer is one of the fastest, safest passenger ships of its kind in the world.

MV Explorer at a Glance:

  • 836-passenger capacity
  • 7 decks
  • 590 feet
  • 24,300 tons

The MV Explorer meets or exceeds all safety standards established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and undergoes regular safety inspections by the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Public Health Service. Additionally, the MV Explorer consistently achieves high scores for vessel sanitation by the CDC.

At the helm of the MV Explorer are two seasoned captains who have been in command on a rotating basis for nearly a decade. More than 200 crew members reside and work aboard the MV Explorer, many of whom have been employed on the ship for more than three years. Shipboard personnel undergo regular emergency and safety drills as mandated by the U.S. Coast Guard and other regulatory bodies.

ISE and V.Ships maintain a multi-tiered emergency management system and work closely to administer internal response protocols for issues relating to participant health and safety as they arise. To learn more about ISE’s health and safety practices, click here or use the quick links below.
