This course will follow the ship’s voyage, starting in southern Italy and ending in northern Germany. It will focus on the ways in which the visual arts developed in relationship to sea travel. We will study how voyages, primarily on the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas, and occasionally piracy, informed the history of art. In addition, we will investigate the invention of the seascape and its historical development. Within this context, we will also discuss representations of marine life by European and American artists.
