In this class we will explore a variety of musical cultures of the Mediterranean region, including
North Africa, the Levant, and southern Europe. Themes will include music and national identity,
gender and sexuality, emotion and meaning, and music and globalization in the Mediterranean
region. Readings on specific musical cultures will be complemented by recordings and, via field
trips, concerts when possible.

Day: 1 - Valetta - Monday, 29 July

July 29 (Valetta, Malta) Students will attend an on-board orientation with musicologist Professor Philip Ciantar of the University of Malta. Afterwards students will join Profs. Shannon and Ciantar for lunch and a visit to the University of Malta . Next, we will head out to hear performances of Maltese music in cultural contexts: wind band music at a festa (festival) and/or ghana spirtu pront, a variety of song-dueling, at a pub. After the performances, students will reconvene on-board for a group discussion with Profs. Shannon and Ciantar. Students shall then write a 5 page report of their experiences. Academic Objectives:

  1. Learn about history of the musical cultures of Malta
  2. Attend performance of Maltese music
  3. Write musical ethnography of performance
