Students will explore the historical practice of photography in Europe with a special emphasis on documentary photography in the construction of a travel narrative. After learning the basics of camera operation and digital capture, students will explore the language of photography in the production of a travel narrative. Readings and discussions will introduce students to historical and contemporary issues of photographic practice. Over the course of the journey students will develop their own travel narrative employing strategies learned in class.

Day: 1 - Friday, 27 June
The Guernica Filed Lab will introduce students to the town of Guernica and its role in the Spanish Civil War. They will explore the role of photography in the Spanish Civil War and be introduced to the photo essay. Students will learn the basic techniques needed to construct their own photographic narrative. Academic Objectives: 1. Introduction to the Spanish Civil War and its role in the photographic essay. 2. Introduction to the narrative elements of a photographic essay. 3. Introduction to the techniques and strategies in producing the photographic essay.
