We will take the opportunity to use photography to not only document our travels, but to examine and deploy it as an art form and a lens to explore the architecture and landscape of the places we visit. Arriving to each of our destinations by sea affords us an opportunity to explore and compare, through the frame of the camera, the unique conditions of the city at the water’s edge. The class will be treated as a digitally-based studio art course, with individual and group critiques of students’ photographic work, and will include lectures on the history, theory, composition, presentation and technical production of photography. Please note that all students will be required to own and have with them on board, (1) a dedicated digital camera (need not be fancy or an SLR, but phone cameras are not acceptable), and (2) a laptop computer (tablets are not acceptable) for the downloading and processing of images with the software (Adobe Lightroom 4) noted under required texts. Photographs will be presented digitally, and no facilities for paper or film photo processing will be available.

Day: 2 - Cadiz - Tuesday, 1 October
Our field lab will take place in Cadiz, Spain, yet another excellent spot for urban photography. Cadiz’ ancient port resides cheek-by-jowl with the old city, which we will explore and photograph on foot. Nearby, ancient salt works frame the road that connects the city peninsula to the mainland. We will reach these bleak and photogenic salt works by bus where we will try our hands at landscape photography. We will spend the day (from 0800 to 1600) alternately meeting together and working separately, spreading out over the city and then coming together at arranged places and times of the day to communicate our finds, like bees in a hive. As an experiment, we might take advantage of social media between students to additionally communicate significant finds as we explore. The goal of the expedition is to guide students to establish ideas about the kinds of photographs that interest them, and to begin to build a body of work around that genre. Students will have two weeks following the Field Lab to edit, assemble and present in class, a portfolio of at least 10 photographs built around an idea that communicates a representation of the city of Cadiz. - To allow students to become creative, informed photographers, able to document their travels with beautiful, thoughtful and critical works of art able to stand on their own.
- To understand and deploy the many compositional strategies available to the photographer.
- To gain a technical understanding of how digital photographic equipment works so that it can be pushed to its optimal use.
