This class is an introduction to travel writing with an emphasis on writing publishable travel essays. Instead of writing for and about the self exclusively, the author vividly describes a traveler’s world and addresses an audience that includes friends, family and the reading public. This kind of writing includes a narrative mix of observation and emotion, research and reporting. We will read and discuss the work of the ‘best’ contemporary travel writers. Students will participate in a public reading of their work. They will receive ongoing comments, edits and evaluations from their peers and their professor.

July 5 (Antalya, Turkey) Antalya, Turkey offers the experience of the marketplace or bazaar. The experience of shopping in the bazaars can be overwhelming for the most experienced traveler. The busyness of the marketplace demands a keen writer's eye, an extraordinary account of sensory details, photos (only when appropriate), comparisons and contrasts. Writers will spend the day together navigating the marketplace. We must be alert, perceptive and diligent about recording the activities and events of the day. Students and professor will move in small groups according to writers' interests. Field labs offer students an opportunity to learn how to do basic ethnographic research in a culture that is not their own. Field labs offer incredible opportunities for vivid description of aspects of cultures that are foreign to us. We will practice writing descriptions that are as alive as the life we see on our lab experience. Field labs offer students a common context in which to think about writing. The labs provide opportunities for students to compare ethnographic notes and make sense of common experiences. Labs provide the enriching material from which writers weave great essays. Academic Objectives:

  1. Students will learn how to conduct ethnographic research and write detailed descriptive notes.
  2. Students will participate in modified oral workshop by comparing research notes and brainstorming topics.
  3. Students will write travel vignettes immediately after field lab assignment
