Dr. Beth Hellwig is passionate about international education and Semester at Sea in particular! She never dreamt of sailing the world when she was growing up in the New Mexico desert and now has this amazing program in her blood after sailing on three previous voyages. Dr. Hellwig’ s mother sailed in the 80s, her son Ryan has sailed on two voyages and her daughter Sarah sailed on the 50th anniversary, Fall 2013 voyage. Beth served as the Director of Student Life in the Spring of 2007 where Desmond Tutu, joined the voyage for the full 100 days-what an amazing life experience! She also sailed as Dean of Students in the summer of 2011 and most recently was a partial voyager in the Fall, 2013 where she shadowed the Executive Dean. She is honored and humbled to have been selected to serve as Executive Dean for the Fall, 2015 voyage! Dr. Hellwig is in her 7th year as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She is on the Chancellor’s Executive Team and is on the Cabinet. The areas within Student Affairs include: Athletics, Recreation and Sport Facilities, Housing & Residence Life, Living/Learning Communities, Student Center, Dining Services, Student Health Services, Student Counseling Services, the Children’s Nature Academy, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Blugold Beginnings, the Civil Rights Pilgrimage, Clubs and Organizations, Women & LGBTQ Resource Center, Center for Alcohol Studies and Education & Off Campus Student Life, Student Government, Greek Life, Legal Services, Dean of Students, Sexual Assault Response, Student Judicial Affairs, National Student Exchange, Veterans Center, Student Wellness, and Activities-Involvement and Leadership. Beth also teaches a course entitled: “Leadership for a Better World”, in the College of Business for first year students. Her areas of expertise include emergency preparedness, leadership development and working with college student development. Prior to joining UW-Eau Claire, Dr. Hellwig served as Dean of Student Services at Gonzaga University, Director of Student Life at the University of Northern Colorado, Assistant Director of Residence Life and Apartment Life at Colorado State University, Director of Student Activities at Montana State University and Educational Programming Coordinator at New Mexico State University. She served as a study abroad coordinator and coordinator for international student exchanges for 8 years in collaboration with doctoral students. Dr. Hellwig has also been very involved with hosting international students from all around the world for many years and has a love for helping them to have a positive American experience while studying in the United States. Dr. Hellwig was the first recipient of the Zenobia Hikes Memorial National Award through NASPA for her mentorship of women in 2011. She was also selected as the NASPA Region IV East recipient of the Outstanding Performance as a Senior Student Affairs Officer in 2012. Most recently she received the Office of Multicultural Affairs Distinguished Service Award in the Fall of 2013. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Northern Colorado in College Student Personnel Administration, M.Ed. from Colorado State University in Student Affairs and Higher Education, and a B.A. in Pre-Law and Political Science from New Mexico State University.
