Spring 2019: A Voyage of Discovery
Associate Professor

Christina Scott

Discipline: Psychology
Whittier College

Christina Scott earned her bachelor’s degree at Occidental College as a double major in psychology and theater and has continued her interdisciplinary love of learning ever since! She ventured out of California to earn her Ph.D. at Kansas State University in Social Psychology and refined her dynamic teaching practice through appointments with several colleges and universities across the nation, including Loyola University of Chicago, California State University Chico, Pepperdine University, Tennessee State University, and St. Mary’s College of California. Ultimately, her professional journey came full circle and Christina found her academic home in Los Angeles, California at Whittier College, where she is an associate professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences. Christina shares with her students that she teaches “…the way I wanted to be taught,” which includes enthusiasm, academic rigor, humor, and creativity. Christina recently received the Harry W. Nerhood Teaching Excellence Award and she has previously been honored with the Key to the College by the Associated Students of Whittier College for her dedication to the college community and outstanding faculty mentorship of first-year students.

Beyond the classroom, Christina works with her undergraduate research team to explore contemporary topics in sexuality, such as friends with benefits relationships, hook-up culture, and sexual self-esteem. Publishing in a wide range of books and journals, she continues to speak nationally and internationally at professional conferences about her sexuality research. She recently co-edited a book, Intimate Relationships and Social Change, which featured eleven empirical articles on dating practices, marriage, and gender roles from researchers in seven different countries. Christina has taught psychology courses for two summers at universities in Shanghai, China, and is excited to have the opportunity to combine her love of teaching and international travel on the Semester at Sea voyage.

An invincible team of three, Christina’s twin daughters, Caitlin and Cassidy (age 4 ½) will join her onboard the MV World Odyssey. As a family, they enjoy snow skiing, dancing, swimming, and carousels, and they look forward to an amazing adventure together!
