Dean Dorrie Fontaine

Dean Dorrie K. Fontaine, RN, PhD, FAAN – the Sadie Heath Cabaniss Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia – has led the School of Nursing since 2008. A seasoned critical care nurse, past president of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and current president of the Virginia Association of Colleges of Nursing, Fontaine has held administrative and academic appointments at University of California San Francisco, Georgetown and the University of Maryland. She holds degrees from Villanova, the University of Maryland, and the Catholic University of America, and is a staunch supporter of interprofessional education for nursing and medical school students. The visionary behind the School’s Compassionate Care and Empathic Leadership Initiative, and a firm believer in promoting diversity among faculty and students, Dean Fontaine lives on U.Va.’s historic Lawn in Pavilion IX with her husband Barry.
