Don Gogniat worked as an administrator for Penn State University from 1986 – 2005. He was the Campus Executive Officer @ Penn State York from 1993- 2003; and from 2003 – 2005, he was the Director of International Programs for the Commonwealth College of Penn State. Since 1993, he has been teaching cultural and regional geography courses many years for Penn State.
His PhD is in Cultural Geography from the University of Pittsburgh (1983); he received an M.A. in Geography from Indiana University of Pa. (1973), and a B.S. in Education from Indiana University of Pa. (1970). He joined the Peace Corps (Costa Rica, 1974-75) and worked as a regional planner for the Costa Rican National Planning Office. Additionally, he has worked for the government of Guatemala studying economic trade regions of rural populations.
Gogniat has sailed on Semester at Sea where he taught geography in the fall of 1985, and Global Studies in fall of 1990 and spring of 2004, spring of 2010, and fall of 2012. He was the Executive Dean on the summer voyage in 2006. He taught a graduate course for teachers on the summer 2008 voyage entitled “Globalizing the Curriculum”.
