Douglas Lay is a proud member of Actor’s Equity
Association, Screen Actor’s Guild and AFTRA unions
and an award winning actor, director and educator.
As a classically trained actor, he has played over 30
Shakespearean roles professionally and has worked on
Broadway (Hamlet), West End London (Twelfth Night
directed by Judy Dench, Into the Woods, etc.), Paris (Hello
Dolly, Richard III, Little Shop of Horrors), regional US
theatre (Old Globe, ACT, SD Rep, South Coast Rep,
etc.), toured the US (Forever Plaid, Greater Tuna) and
performed at 9 US Shakespearean Festivals (Oregon
Shakespearean, LA Shakespeare, Montana Shakespeare,
etc.) Mr Lay can be seen in many films most recent Werner
Herzog/David Lynch’s My Son, My Son…He is Artistic
Director of The Theatre, Inc. and has directed over 25 plays
including 13 Greek classics translated by Dr Marianne
McDonald (Prometheus, The Orestia, Iphigenia at Aulis,
The Frogs, etc.) He has won two Backstage awards, a
Dramalogue, a Cluny Trophy, Angus Bowmer Award
and a Patte for acting and directing. Teaching credentials
include USC, UCSD, Will & Co, SDJT and IMT. He holds
a BFA from SOSC and an MFA from FSU and has studied
with Uta Hagen, Herbert Bergdorf, Charles Mee, Robert
Bendetti and Michael Chekhov. This is Mr Lay’s first
Semester at Sea.
