Nick Iammarino

Dr. Nicholas K. (Nick) Iammarino is currently Professor and Director of Health Sciences and also serves as Chair in the Department of Kinesiology at Rice University. Dr. Iammarino is also an Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Iammarino earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Dayton, Ohio and a Master of Health Education from the University of Toledo, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in Health Education from The Ohio State University with specialization in Preventive Medicine (Epidemiology). Nick was elected Fellow of the American School Health Association in 1985, and Fellow of the American Association of Health Education in 1998 and was credentialed as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) in 1989. He is a founding member and has served on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Health Behavior.

Dr. Iammarino has been active in both state and national professional organizations. He has served on the National Youth Education Subcommittee, at the American Cancer Society, National Office. He also served as Chairman of the Schools and Colleges Committee of the American Cancer Society, Texas Division. Dr. Iammarino has also been elected to the Board of Directors of the American School Health Association (ASHA) as well as the American Association of Health Education (AAHE). These are in addition to the various other committee responsibilities in which he has served including; Professional Development (ProNet) Committee (AAHE); and Chair of the Research Council (ASHA). Nick is Senior Associate Editor for the American Journal of Health Behavior and is a member of the Board of Associate Editors for the American Journal of Health Education. He also serves on the Editorial board of 3 additional health-related journals. He also served as U.S. Regional Vice President of the Ibero American Association for School and University Health headquartered in Madrid, Spain.

Recognized by his peers for his contributions to the field of Health Promotion and Education, Dr. Iammarino is the recipient of a number of state and national awards including: the Outstanding Volunteer Award and the Lifesaver Award, American Cancer Society, Texas Division, the Martha Licata Distinguished Service Award, Texas School Health Association; the Distinguished Service Award, American School Health Association; and the American Association for Health Education Professional Service Award.

With regard to his professional international experience, Dr. Iammarino has completed the around the world voyage on the SS Universe Explorer as a Visiting Lecturer, Semester at Sea Program, University of Pittsburgh in Spring 1996, the Executive Dean on the 100th voyage in Fall 2009, and most recently as Executive Dean on the Fall 2013 voyage.  He has amassed a significant amount of international travel experience that includes more than 60 countries. At Rice University, he is a founding member and Board of Governor of the Goliard Travel Scholarship. He has assisted in Study Abroad Advising and was also the Coordinator of Rice’s Japanese Exchange Programs. He has successfully co-sponsored an England/Scotland travel-study course in comparative health policy for students and faculty since 1990. A previous officer of the American School Health Association, Dr. Iammarino served as Chairman of the International Health Council. His past international projects were in Sakhalin Island, in Far East Russia; Baku, Azerbaijan; and Bucaramanga, Colombia.
