Dr. Philip Sloane (“the real Dr. Phil”) is the Elizabeth and Oscar Goodwin Distinguished Professor of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has been on faculty since 1979. He has certification in family medicine, travel medicine, and geriatric medicine; has years of experience working in a rural emergency department; and is the author or editor of 18 books and over 200 scientific publications. Before becoming a doctor, he majored in history at Pomona College and spent one semester in India and another on Semester at Sea (S67). He returned to SAS as a trip physician for the F11 voyage and S17. He speaks Spanish fairly well and also enjoys playing piano, especially in groups or to accompany vocalists. As part of the ship’s health care team, his goal will be for all students and staff to enjoy a safe, healthy, and horizon-expanding voyage.
