Emily’s affiliation with Semester at Sea began at age 10 when she and her family were indirectly introduced to the program while traveling aboard one of the program’s old ships, the S.S. Universe, during a summer cruise to Alaska. Several years later, both of her sisters were fortunate enough to sail as students, but Emily’s undergrad program left little time for study abroad. Fortunately, she was given the opportunity to work as a nurse during the Spring 2007 voyage, and she was forever changed.
Emily received her bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) from Indiana University and her master of science in nursing (MSN)/family nurse practitioner (FNP) degree from California State University. She currently practices as a board certified emergency nurse practitioner in a busy trauma center near downtown San Diego. In the past, Emily has worked as an ER nurse, critical care flight nurse, and legal nurse consultant.
Semester at Sea’s philosophy of embracing life–changing experiences “outside of your comfort zone” has become one of the driving principles in Emily’s life. This has motivated her to seek opportunities which allow her to combine two of the things she’s most passionate about, travel and healthcare delivery, as often as possible. Now preparing for her third voyage, Emily is excited to meet everyone and for all of the new adventures awaiting us aboard the MV Explorer!
