Jeffery Smith has over thirty years experience as an educator and counselor. He earned a B.A. in English and two M.A.’s in Education from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Jeff worked in a wide array of schools and therapeutic settings in Colorado before relocating to Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2001, where he taught English and psychology, and served as the Upper School Learning Coordinator for the Carolina Friends School. Since 2006 he has been the AVID Site Coordinator for Charlottesville High School, helping a diverse group of over 125 students successfully navigate the college admissions process. He has recently begun work as an independent education consultant. Jeff’s earliest interest in writing and travel was sparked by reading Whitman and Kerouac, and by having a mind-opening, cross-country hitchhiking adventure of his own. Also an avid photographer, he is looking forward to documenting the sail in both word and image. Jeff is excited about the opportunity to engage with students as Director of the Learning/Writing Center, and to travel the globe with his wife Susan, who will be teaching English on the voyage.
