Jill Martiniuk is a doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia in the Slavic Languages & Literature program. She specializes in 20th century Russian novels and their relationship with Western works. She was one of the recipients of the 2013 Summer Language Institute Summer Research Grants and the 2013 GSAS Foreign Study Award, which allowed her to conduct research on Dante in Russian literature in Florence, Italy and Moscow, Russia last year. Beyond her dissertation work, Jill teaches classes on academic writing and critical thinking for the English program and UVA’s Summer Enrichment Program on topics such as travel literature, the fashion industry and the circus.
This is Jill’s second time sailing with Semester at Sea. In her free time she enjoys traveling, gardening, photography and cooking.
