John Boyer

Virginia Tech

John Boyer is a Senior Instructor in the Department of Geography at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Boyer is a long time VT resident, receiving an B.A. (1996) and M.S. (1998) in Geography, both from Virginia Tech. Mr. Boyer teaches large sections of the popular World Regional Geography and Geography of Wine courses. In last decade, enrollments have grown from average class size of 50 to 600, with World Regions now taught to a record-breaking 3000 students every fall. He has produced unconventional, compelling textbooks on global studies and wine (The Plaid Avenger’s World is in its 6th edition, and Drink This Now! is in its 2nd edition); has developed an educational graphic novel series; produced podcasts and an educational website for his classes (; used social networking campaigns to bring celebrities and world leaders into the classroom; and actively incorporates all manner of technologies into the classroom in order to increase interaction and learning for the students.

Boyer has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, stays on the cutting edge of educational experimentation, and now regularly speaks at educational and technology conferences on his incorporation of new technologies and social networking tools into the 21st century classroom. He was also a faculty member on the Fall 2013 voyage with Semester at Sea.
