Jonathan Shannon

Jonathan Shannon is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology, Hunter College, and the PHD Programs in Anthropology and Music at the CUNY Graduate Center. His research focuses on aesthetics, music performance, and culinary cultures of the Mediterranean and Arab worlds, with a special focus on Syria, Morocco, and Spain. He is the author of Among the Jasmine Trees: Music and Modernity in Contemporary Syria (Wesleyan UP, 2006) and numerous articles.  Shannon is currently working on two book projects: one on cultural memory and Andalusian music in Syria, Morocco, and Spain entitled Performing al-Andalus, Remembering al-Andalus: Mediterranean Soundings, and a collection of essays on cultural itineraries of sounds and spices around the Mediterranean, tentatively entitled Routes of Mediterranean Culture: Toward a Pirate Ethnography.
