Dr. Joseph C. (Joe) Moon is Dean for Campus Life at Oxford College of Emory University. Serving as a dean at Emory for more than thirty years, Joe has been an energetic and creative leader in developing many programs, services, traditions, and physical improvements on Emory’s Atlanta and Oxford campuses. As the chief student affairs officer at Oxford, Joe oversees a broad range of student services and supervises a talented staff in areas such as residence life, community outreach, leadership development, health education, counseling, student health, varsity athletics, freshman programs, and international student services.
Joe earned his B.A. from Furman University, his M.Ed. in Student Affairs at the University of Georgia and his doctorate at the Institute of Higher Education, also at UGA. In addition to his administrative duties at Oxford College, Joe has taught graduate classes at UGA and undergraduates at Emory, lead numerous Freshman Seminar classes, and is the author of An Uncommon Place, the institutional history of Oxford College.
Traveling and learning about the cultures of the world is one of Joe’s life-long interests. He has led groups of Emory students to South Africa, Honduras, Bolivia, Northern Ireland, Cuba, Kenya, Mexico, Ecuador, Viet Nam, Costa Rica, and, with his family, has visited many other countries across the globe. Joe looks forward to this extraordinary experience of a floating classroom with the promise of living-learning community that is unique to Semester at Sea.
