IT Coordinator

Kelly Johnston

Kelly has the world’s mappiest job as a member of the University of Virginia faculty focused on Geographic Information Science.  His graduate degree (MS in GIS from Indiana University at Indianapolis) and his previous voyages (Fall 2006, Summer 2008, Spring 2011) with his wife Mary, our voyage librarian, were all about the mapping.  He teaches GIS courses and consults with faculty and students on using geospatial tools for research and teaching across academic disciplines.  Kelly’s education, experience, and contributions to the profession earned him the GISP professional certification in GIS.  Kelly worked as an IT Coordinator on the Spring 2011 voyage of Semester At Sea.  He looks forward to working with all of you in the MV Explorer’s computer lab and wishes everyone a mappy voyage.
