- Merchant Marine Academy of Macedonia
Captain Kostas was born in Epanomi near Thessaloniki in Northern Greece, a small but beautiful village by the sea. Although his family was not acquainted with sea-faring, he heard the sea calling him at the age of 16 and he joined the Merchant Marine Academy of Macedonia in Thessaloniki in 1982. He graduated in 1985 and started his career as Deck Cadet and 3rd Bridge Officer on board cargo ships.
He was gradually promoted throughout his career to 2nd Bridge Officer, 1st Bridge Officer and Chief Officer. Due to high grades he obtained his Chief Officer license with honors. In 2001 he acquired his Master’s license and continued working on cruise ships in the position of Staff Captain before being appointed Captain in 2011 while working for a Mexican cruise liner.
Captain Kostas joined Semester at Sea (SAS) in June 2005 and his dream to circumnavigate the globe in a single voyage came true. He has been the Captain of our current and 6th ship in SAS history, the World Odyssey, since Fall 2015. He feels part of the SAS family and enjoys watching students broaden their horizons and gaining a better understanding of the world on each voyage.
When not at sea, Captain Kostas resides with his wife and two children in the suburbs of Portsmouth England, where they have lived since 2000. Captain Kostas met his lovely wife in England and is often quoted saying he, “left the sun of Greece for the sun in his heart.” He is also very keen on table tennis and wooden ships (in scale) modeling.
