Dr. Fonken is Director of Counseling and Wellness Programs for the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University where she provides support and counseling services to students, interns, and residents and oversees the wellness curriculum for the college. In addition she coordinates the DVM Orientation for incoming veterinary students, teaches in the DVM Foundations courses, and directs and teaches the Healer’s Art Course, a discovery model course in values clarification and professionalism.
Dr. Fonken is a licensed psychotherapist, and holds a Master’s Degree in Agency Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado and a Ph.D. in Education from Colorado State University. Over the last 30 years she has worked in higher education, private practice, clinical hospital settings, and for non-profit, and governmental agencies.
She is currently a member of The Veterinary Mental Health Professionals group, and the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges Veterinary Wellness Action Group. She has been involved in the planning and implementation of the annual AAVMC Veterinary Health and Wellness Summits and led the 4th annual AAVMC Veterinary Health and Wellness Summits: Reaching New Heights in Veterinary Well Being in 2016 at Colorado State University. Most recently she has enjoyed traveling the country offering presentations and workshops to veterinary professionals in the area of strengthening well-being through the practice of healthy resilience, engagement and compassion satisfaction.
A native of Colorado she spends her free time out in nature, trail running, hiking, skiing and enjoying outdoor adventures with her two sons.
