Spring 2022: Mediterranean Exploration
Trip Liaison

Lewis Cutter

Lew Cutter is returning to Semester at Sea after experiencing his first amazing voyage in the Spring of 2017. His perspective on the Spring 2022 voyage should be more similar to the sailing students now that he is fully retired and is in the process of learning new skills for a repurposed life. In his previous life, Lew was a therapeutic Optometrist who owned his practice in Steamboat Springs, Colorado for the last 25 years. Lew received his Doctorate from the University of Houston College of Optometry in in 1988. Ten years in Texas changed his life with education and with the greater event of meeting his future wife, Mary Ann. Now 34 years later they have the wonderful love of 3 kids and 3.5 grandkids who are spread out between Calgary, Canada and Boston, Mass.  After the Texas graduations, and the saying of the “I Do’s”, Lew and Mary Ann decided to move to Colorado. A first for her, but for Lew, a Colorado State returning home. During University alumni, moving to Denver then Colorado Springs, and finally Steamboat was like his career, Lew has served as professional volunteer and Board President for the non-profit Colorado Optometric Center; serving the itinerant and underserved populations of Denver, as a Board Member for the Colorado Optometric Association; a state wide political organization and as a Board Member and then Vice -President for the state’s Department of Regulatory Agency for Optometry; an agency that oversees public complaints and insures that Optometric Doctors practice at the top of the profession. Lew is also an avid outdoor enthusiast. His seasonal enjoyment includes downhill and backcountry skiing, mountain biking and Hut to Hut gravel bike trips, camping and climbing 14ers and of course finding time to play golf.  He has shared these passions with family and other young men and women as a local and regional Scout leader for 15 years and increasingly as a volunteer with his local church. He hopes the next 30 years will be as active and rewarding as the past 34!!
