For over twenty-five years Marvel has had the pleasure of working with Semester At Sea, serving on the medical and student life teams as Counselor. Marvel and family members have sailed on four full voyages, Spring 1995, Fall 1999, Spring 2007, Spring 2010, Spring 2020 and many seminars at sea and reunion voyages enjoying work and life on four different vessels. She has an MS in Human Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, is a family system therapist specializing in trauma resolution, disordered eating, addictive disorders and currently focuses on suicide prevention. Marvel has co-authored numerous books in the self-help genre as well as titles on mindfulness and inspiration. Beyond her professional work in counseling centers, private therapy, leading training programs for educators, medical personnel and the public throughout the US and internationally, she co-founded Cambodia’s Hope.
Marvel’s first voyage resulted in adopting her daughter Sopahn from Cambodia who first sailed as a toddler, then a child, next a teenager and in Spring 2020 as a college student. After raising their children, Sopahn and Alex (SAS Spring ’19) in the mountains of Northern New Mexico, Marvel and her pediatrician husband Tom moved to California to support rural farm workers and make their home on Imperial Beach, south of San Diego.
The most fulfilling part of past voyages for Marvel has been the SAS onboard community, each voyage building its own identity, finding its own joy. Marvel and Tom, are looking forward to meeting new voyagers and anticipate sharing the Spring 2022 voyage, one bound to be filled with endless adventures.
