Mary Jo Johnston is honored to be sailing as librarian on her fifth Semester at Sea voyage. She has recently retired from the University of Virginia to her home state of Missouri, far from the sea. While at UVA, she served as the Semester at Sea librarian supporting the partnership between UVA and SAS, managing the inimitable shipboard library on the MV Explorer, and working with faculty to ensure needed library materials were on board each voyage. Prior to her academic librarian role at UVA, Mary Jo served as a corporate librarian managing the unique library and archives of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In retirement, she continues to focus on distinctive libraries via volunteer roles with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Yellowstone National Park, two extraordinary institutions housing special library collections.
Having visited 50 states and 50 countries without leaving the surface of the earth, Mary Jo is eager to continue her planet-hugging exploits with her favorite travel partner and husband Kelly Johnston, a retired map nerd from UVA, and to experience again the magic of a Semester at Sea.
